Duncan:_11/0111/16/07

This is a compilation of footage of Duncan, my six year old APHA buckskin gelding. There\'s lots of stuff I\'m working on right now--for both of us. In terms of my position, I\'m learning to sit up straighter and wait for the horse over fences (I\'m a work in progress, and I have my days of regression...you can see some of that here.); for Duncan, I\'m working on helping him find \"normal\" distances (instead of the crazy cat leap distances) using gymnastics and other exercises. Here\'s a brief summary of the goals for the days in the video:\n\n11/01: Our focus was a one stride gymnastic, with an occasional turn to a single vertical. A few times, we started with the vertical, and then we reversed the order.\n\n11/02: Today we did some jumping involving the barrel (which Duncan always gives a weary eye), and we played a little with lead changes. Every now and then, we come really close to a full flying lead change!\n\n11/08: We worked on some flatwork, esp. work on our transitions from trot to canter. I think I only have a little canter footage from this particular evening. I was being all OCD about my leg position and driving myself and Jen crazy.\n\n11/10: I took another lesson with Rob Burroughs at the NJEC. It was a freezing cold day, but Duncan and I both managed to work up a sweat. In my previous lesson, Rob had suggested wearing spurs to my next lesson (this one). I didn\'t--and wow, I didn\'t need to. Duncan was pretty wired from the tractor and two horses that were being lunged when we were warming up, and I actually spent most of the lesson trying to keep him from going hyper-speed.\n\n11/16: I was planning on doing lots of transition work while riding Duncan in my bareback pad. Unfortunately, our time was cut short when a pony flipped over and slammed a wall head first while someone was trying to mount it. The other horse in the ring took off sideways when the pony got up and charged it. (As far as I know, the pony is okay.) Duncan was a saint--he didn\'t even move throughout the whole incident. I was pretty shaken up, and I decided he deserved lots of treats and a break. We\'ll have to try this again another time, when there\'s less people around and less chance for something crazy to happen!\n\nI\'m so thrilled with his progress so far. Thank you all for your comments and kind words!
